Cleveland Head Start
Size: 28,000 Square FeetBudget: $3,000,000
Head Start is a federally funded program serving underprivileged children ages 0 to 5 years old and their families. This 28,000 square foot facility is located adjacent to a Rapid Transit Station designed by this firm in 1992. An enclosed canopy will connect this building with the station to encourage the use of public transportation while providing quality childcare for single parents. The facility consists of 12 classroom, a multi-purpose room for indoor play and community functions, a computer room, administration, and a small auditorium for community programs. The building form separates the classroom wings with a large oval form containing common space. The change in floor elevation allows for open space for indoor play while the steps encourage impromptu storytelling and interaction. The irregular curved roofs permit natural light to flood the interior spaces.
